What is Co-Enzyme Q-10?
Scientifically, this substance is found in the quinine (Q) group of chemicals. The 10 denotes that it contains ten chemical subunits of isoprenyl. Other scientific names for Co-Enzyme Q-10 substance are ubiquinone and ubidecarenone. It is a naturally occurring substance that is present in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells in the human body, but levels of Q-10 decrease with aging, which may be partly responsible for the occurrence of some diseases related to aging.
CoQ10 is found in many foods naturally, including meats, nuts, fruits, vegetables and some dairy products. Organ meats contain higher levels of Q10, as would be expected, because of their requirements of high energy cellular action and high levels of Q10.
