Free-standing book stores like Borders and Barnes and Noble are seeing decreased sales in books. In 2009, Borders was widely reported to be on the verge of bankruptcy. There are many reasons why book sales have plummeted in the last few years, causing prices to drop. Some subjects, like history, have suffered the most in terms of swift cost declines. This trend has even impacted used book dealers that generally price books at one quarter of what they originally sold for. But buyers can usually find the same books for even less through on-line sites like Amazon and half.com, including college text books.

The History Book Club advertises the book to its members at the discount price of $24.49. The lowest price for the new hardcover on Alibris.com is $17.34 while a bookseller on E-bay posts a bid price of $9.99 as a “brand new” book.
