Of all the British Blue Eyed soul singers to chart in the 1960s, Chris Farlowe was the nearest to the American prototype of the bluesy shouter. Otis Redding famously attended one of his performances at the Flamingo in London and so much liked what he heard that he invited him to appear on one of his shows.

But while Out Of Time was a monster British hit of 1966 - reaching the number one spot the same week England landed the World Cup at Wembley - further chart success would prove hard to come by. It has been a matter of great frustration to his fans that a performer with such a singular voice has never been accorded the critical acclaim that is his due.

In the early 1950s, a generation of young British musicians had "discovered" American R&B and started bringing it to appreciative home audiences. Chris Farlowe, born in 1940, was one of these. After intially fronting his own skiffle band, he formed The Thunderbirds, with whom he started to build a reputation on the London club scene for roastingly hot live performances.
