Holmes County, Ohio, is the center of the world’s largest Amish community. Over four million visitors come every year, and one of the products the area has become known for are the colorful, artistic, finely-stitched quilts made in Amish country and sold in shops around the area.

It’s easy to find the area’s major quilt shops in the small towns. These quilt shops showcase the work of local quilters, most of whom are Mennonite and Amish. Anyone shopping for a quilt will find all colors, sizes, and designs. Quilts may be pieced, appliquéd or embroidered. Sizes range from pot holders and wall hangings to king-size bed quilts.
Helping Hands Quilt Shop in Berlin and Miller’s Dry Goods in Charm are the two oldest quilt stores in Holmes County and are located on the main street of their respective towns. Both had small beginnings, created simply to fill a need in the community. Then the outside world discovered Amish country, and quilts became a symbol of rural Amish and Mennonite culture. Quilting now is also an art. Visiting Grandma Fannie’s Quilt Barn east of Berlin is almost like walking through an art gallery.
